Average gas prices for March 20

NY state's average gas price, though 8 cents a gallon higher than a month ago, is 54.5 cents lower than at this time previous year.

Gas prices started the year at $1.74 and dropped every week through February 15, when the average reached a low of $1.50.

"This is the fastest we've seen gas prices go up in months", said Chelsea Pompeani, spokeswoman for AAA East Central. As weather gets warmer, people drive more, which increases demand for gas.

The current area average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $1.80, which is 3 cents more than last week, in Rutherford County.

The lowest price in South Florida is $1.89 in Juno Beach, Opa-Locka and Miami, according to gasbuddy.com, which collects reports from consumers.
