Law enforcement in New York City and on Long Island said they were intensifying security at airports and on mass transit after the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels.
Scott Ladd, a spokesman for the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which runs several New York-area airports, including John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia, told USA TODAY that the authority's police force is "stepping up its presence at each of our major metropolitan airports".
The Port Authority police are being joined by troopers from the New York State Police at locations including New York Penn Station and the George Washington Bridge, Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York said in a statement. The agency is also "employing high visibility antiterrorist patrols" on PATH trains and at the World Trade Center site, he said. "Securing New York City is our show of solidarity with the people of Brussels and the victims of terrorism worldwide".
Three explosions that ripped through the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday killed at least 26 people, according to Belgian media, and raised the reality of terror once again in the heart of Europe.

The additional police are being sent to crowded areas and at transit stops aiming to not only provide security, but reassure the public, Davis said.
At a news conference later in the day, Mayor Bill de Blasio commended the NYPD, in particular, for increasing the police presence around the city within a short time frame. All remaining flights to and from Brussels International have been suspended until further notice from local authorities.
"At present, we have no specific, credible intelligence of any plot to conduct similar attacks here in the U.S", the head of the agency said via Twitter. The Metro Police tweeted out reassurance that while there is no known threat as of yet, extra precautions will be taken.
