Last year, drivers here spent, on average, 126 hours waiting in traffic, with commutes nearly 11/2 times longer during morning and evening peak hours than during periods of smooth traffic.

The city's traffic congestion rate went down by three per cent, dropping from 31 to 28 in 2015, according to TomTom's latest traffic index report.

In total, the average commuter travelling to and from the UK's top 25 cities is sat in traffic for an additional 127 hours a year because of congestion.

Vancouver tops the list with an added 133 hours of extra travel time a year, while Calgary is at the bottom.

Chicago's worst traffic past year was January 8, when a snowstorm swept through the area, Kartik said.

Next on the list are Manchester and Edinburgh - with journeys taking 37% longer - followed by Brighton (34%), Hull (33%) and Bournemouth (32%).

TomTom experts attributed that to new traffic management policies, investments in infrastructure and more flexible working schedules to make up for more traffic from job growth and bad weather.

Cleveland Cavaliers clinch playoff spot with win over Orlando Magic
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder clinched National Basketball Association (NBA) play-off berths on Friday night. Orlando plays in Toronto (Sunday afternoon), Boston (Monday), Detroit (Wednesday) and Miami (Friday) in the coming six days.

That figure rises to a ridiculous 86 per cent during the evening peak.

Traffic levels in the UK's biggest cities were 14% higher in 2015 they were in 2010, the annual TomTom Traffic Index has revealed. Denver ranks 113th of the 174 largest cities in the world for traffic congestion. "And we give drivers the real-time traffic information and smart routing they need to avoid congested roads and get to where they want to be, faster", Schaefer said.

Sydney's traffic problem has overtaken that in NY, a global congestion index suggests.

"If only five per cent of us changed our travel plans, we could improve traffic congestion on our main roads by up to 30%".

But Cardiff can give itself a pat on the back, with overall congestion down 19 per cent since 2008.

TomTom researchers based their congestion measurements on almost 300 cities around the world and have built a database with 14 trillion historical travel time measurements that help give accurate traffic details.
