GW Gymnastics Headed to NCAA Athens Regional

After finishing second in the SEC Tournament over the weekend, Alabama gymnastics got a No. 1 seed and the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA announced that the five teams joining No. 9 Georgia at the Athens regional on April 2 will be No. 3 LSU, No. 13 Oregon State, Arizona, George Washington and Michigan State. Toni-Ann Williams won vault and finished third in the all-around to clinch an individual bid to nationals. The two teams advanced together out of the Fayetteville Regional in 2014.

Hosting for just the third time in school history in last year's Berkeley Regional, Cal fell short of a national championship berth with a 196.000.

Utah State will compete as the sixth seed and travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, for the six-team regional.

"I think with another SEC opponent and another high-level opponent like LSU, it always raises your game", Durante said. But Hughes, Schwab and Lopez made the most of the season, which helped them stay up with the best of the best.

Oregon State has yet to surpass the 197 benchmark team score, which denotes an average of 9.85. Teams 19-36 are organized into three pods (19-24, 25-30 and 31-36) and placed geographically at one of the six sites, beginning with teams 19-24, followed by teams 25-30 and then finally teams 31-36.

The rotation schedule for the regional competition has already been set. Even if the meet will seem neutral in some ways, the Gymdog seniors will have a final chance to relish and benefit from a home crowd.

"Obviously we're disappointed that we didn't win the meet because our hope and expectation is to win it every year", Farden said.

"Our team has a lot more potential than what we've shown so far", Chappel said. "Gymnastics is that kind of sport. I think that is helpful in that we know what to expect from them and what it's going to take to move on to nationals", said Marsden.

"We're really excited about our regional seeding", said Arizona head coach Tabitha Yim. Therefore, gymnasts must be prepared to quickly shift from resting to competing.

The Broncos ended their regular season 12-0. Each regional site will feature six teams, four all-around competitors who are not part of teams who qualified for regional competition and two individual event specialists for each event who met the minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), all vying for spots at the Championships. But before that, they'll have to finish in the top two at the regional.
