Population is booming in the Lone Star State: According to the most recent numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas has added more new residents than any other state in the country.

Total, the four metro areas (Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland; Dallas-Fort Worth; Austin-Round Rock; and San Antonio-New Braunfels) saw a combined population increase of more than 400,000 from July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015.

The Villages, Fla., a metro area west of the Orlando metro area, was the nation's fastest-growing metro area for the third year in a row, as its population increased 4.3 percent between 2014 and 2015.

More than half the state's population growth came from the three Portland metro counties: Multnomah County's population rose by 12,414, Washington County's grew 11,053 and Clackamas County added 7,011.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cook County's population dropped in 2015, marking the area's first decline since 2007. Cochise County's population drop in the last two years has been around 1.8 percent. That number increased by 223 people to hit an all-time high of 31,587, making it one of only nine counties in the state to hit all-time population highs in 2015. Rounding out the top five metro areas for population gains in the period were Atlanta, Phoenix and NY.

1,010,025 people called Pima County home in 2015.

He added that population growth is generally going to center on urban areas, where employment opportunities are more abundant. The number of births in the area outpaced the number of deaths by over 1,300 people.

The U.S. Census Bureau data reflected population statistics for 381 metropolitan and 536 micropolitan areas plus 3,142 counties natiownwide. He specifically listed Dundy, Webster, Furnas and Jefferson counties, saying those areas tend to have a relatively old population compared to other parts of Nebraska. Both of these Texas metro areas showed the largest gains nationwide. The biggest contributor in Austin is Travis county.
