The Broncos will hold a news conference on Monday at 1 p.m. ET to discuss Manning's exit.

Though Elway - a man who, incidentally, retired from the Broncos after winning a Super Bowl himself (actually, two) - had said there was no deadline for Manning to make his decision, it's a safe bet the team wanted its answer, if it didn't already have one, by March 9.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will announce his retirement from the National Football League on Monday, bringing an end to an illustrious career that will surely land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, nfl.com reported on Sunday.

The former Colts quarterback has informed the Denver Broncos that he will retire, ending a legendary 18-year career. "That made us better as a team, and I'm thrilled that we were able to win a championship in his final year", Elway added in the statement.

His first came in 2007 with the Indianapolis Colts, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 1998.

A series of surgeries on his neck and a spinal fusion in 2011 led the Colts to release Manning.

- During the 2013 regular season, Manning set records for the most passing yards (5,477) and touchdown passes (55) but his Broncos went on to suffer a lopsided loss in that campaign's Super Bowl.

Manning spent 14 years in Indianapolis and played in 208 games with the Colts, completing 64.9% of his passes for 54,828 yards (7.6 yards per attempt), 399 touchdowns, and 198 interceptions for a passer rating of 94.9. I get to start at quarterback in it and I'm grateful for that opportunity and I think I haven't gotten too reflective and too analytical of the big picture.

But Manning's postseason legacy has always been a point of criticism, which made his team's Super Bowl win that much more important.

A grim season took a darker turn when Manning was linked in an Al-Jazeera television report to allegations of performance enhancing drugs - claims the Broncos star has angrily dismissed as "garbage".

In addition to his on-field contributions, Manning has been actively involved in the community throughout his playing career.

"It was a blessing to coach Peyton Manning. So we really grinded on him".

"He's a Hall of Fame player and a Hall of Fame person".

Since that win, a guessing game over Manning's intentions has swirled, with some even suggesting he could have chose to extend his career with the Los Angeles Rams.

Manning has a strong relationship with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam from their ties to the state of Tennessee, and Haslam's interest in having Manning in a management/ownership role are long known (dating back several years to his interest in the Titans at the time).
