The Panthers' reason for releasing him was likely more financial than performance related, as the move will save them almost $11 million in cap room.

Scott, a versatile backup who appeared in 31 games the past three seasons, signed his fourth straight 1-year contract.

"Charles has had a very good career as a Carolina Panther and I've enjoyed coaching him the past five seasons", head coach Ron Rivera said.

"Dwan represents what we look for in defensive tackles", said general manager Dave Gettleman. I wish him the best moving forward.”Johnson seemed to take the news in stride. He played nine regular season games and all three playoff games, recording three sacks in the postseason that culminated with a loss in the Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos.

The Carolina Panthers released defensive end Charles Johnson Thursday, clearing $11 million in salary cap space. Teaming first with Julius Peppers and then with Greg Hardy, Johnson was part of one of the strongest pass-rushing defensive end combos in the league for a while, and he was also an excellent run defender. The veteran defensive end is the second starting pass rusher that the Panthers have lost this offseason, as defensive end Jared Allen announced his retirement this past February.

Johnson was released by the Panthers on Thursday. Over the next four seasons after signing his extension, "Big Money" averaged over 10 sacks a season and was a pillar of the defense.

Johnson, a third-round pick in 2007, was a monster in the early part of his career.
