Embattled North Carolina State coach Mark Gottfried was sacked on Thursday, the school announced after days of speculation. However, the leader of the Wolfpack's men's basketball program will finish out the rest of the 2016-2017 season.

This news comes on the heels of three straight blowout losses for the Wolfpack, including a 97-73 home loss to North Carolina on Wednesday night.

"We believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward", N.C. State athletics director Debbie Yow said in a statement. "Our focus now remains on supporting our student-athletes and staff over the final weeks of our season".

Gottfried is now 122-82 in his time at NC State- 47-55 in ACC play.

Gottfried led NC State to the NCAA tournament in his first four years leading the program, but the Wolfpack went 16-17 and 5-13 in ACC play last year and missed the tournament.

This season in particular got very ugly, very fast-non-conference play was kind to N.C. State, as it entered ACC play 11-2.

Niki Caro to direct live-action Mulan film
Caro's hiring likely takes her out of the running for Captain Marvel , the studio's first female-fronted superhero movie. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World) are doing the rewrite of the for Mulan that Disney bought in 2015.

"It's been a privilege to serve as coach of NC State, and I'm proud of what we accomplished during my time here", Gottfried said in a statement.

Gottfried made the tournament in his first four seasons at NC State before missing the postseason entirely previous year during a 16-17 season.

Gottfried is in his sixth season as NC State's head coach.

The school announced that its search process for a successor will begin immediately.

Considering the Wolfpack were thumped by 30 points in a loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on February 11, it appears a rousing effort against the Tar Heels will have to be in order to give Gottfried a sliver of hope that his job can be salvaged. According to Decourcy, the program considered firing Gottfried after its fifth straight loss on on Saturday, an 88-58 defeat to Wake Forest, but decided the timing wasn't right.
