The Green Bay Packers have released James Starks, a seven-year veteran who struggled this season and didn't play after Week 14 following a vehicle accident.

Shields, who announced Wednesday on Instagram he had been released, had one year and $9 million remaining on a four-year, $39 million contact signed in 2014.

Also, some analysts are saying that Green Bay wanted James Starks to have a lower salary and that they are going to bring him back for a less than $3 million. It was Shields' fourth concussion in the National Football League, including one late in the 2015 season that kept him out of the lineup for four games.

Both Shields and Starks were rookies on the team's Super Bowl XLV-winning team and both played key roles.

The 30-year played in 76 games for the Packers, rushing for 2,506 yards and nine touchdowns on 618 carries.

A few days after the game, coach Mike McCarthy said Shields was still in the concussion protocol. After winning their final six regular season games, it was enough to earn the Packers a seat in the playoffs.

As running backs go, he just passed that 30-year-old threshold, though he doesn't have a lot of wear and tear on him, having averaged under 100 rushes per season in his career. "It varies. I never know". Each day it's getting better.

In January, Shields was charged in Brown County Circuit Court with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The Giants have veteran running back Rashad Jennings. He added two more picks in the NFC Championship Game against the Chicago Bears, helping the Packers advance to the Super Bowl, which they won to give Shields his championship ring.

Shields was a great player for Green Bay, and he will be missed.
